Before Colin, many of us had never even heard of HCM.
Not parents. Not athletes. Not coaches. Not communities.
Yet Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) is one of the leading causes of sudden cardiac death in young athletes.
The frightening part is this:
Many children with HCM look completely healthy.
They run.
They laugh.
They compete.
They train hard.
They pass regular physicals.
And sometimes… there are no warning signs at all.
Our son Colin was one of those kids.
He was active. Strong. Full of life. A young athlete with dreams, purpose, and a heart for people. But hidden beneath what looked like perfect health was a condition our family had never been warned about.
That reality changed our lives forever.
Through Colin’s Heart Foundation, we are committed to bringing awareness, education, and conversation to something too many families discover only after tragedy strikes.
We believe parents deserve awareness.
Coaches deserve education.
Athletes deserve protection.
Communities deserve access to information that could save lives.
This blog is not just about statistics.
It is about real people. Real families. Real stories.
So we want to ask you:
Have you ever heard of HCM before today?
Has sudden cardiac loss affected someone you know?
Do you believe schools and youth sports programs should talk more about heart screenings?
Your voice matters. Your story matters. And your willingness to share could help another family recognize signs, ask questions, or seek testing sooner.
